A MESSAGE FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE ITHACA TIMES

Hello Upstate NYers!!

I am happy to announce one final show for the month of October. This SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26 I am thrilled to present experimental guitarist TOM CARTER at the LOST DOG LOUNGE. Hudson-based musician CYRUS GENGRAS and Ithaca's own AMERICAN SPHINX will open. This show will be a unique opportunity to see a masterful, versatile musician perform an intimate solo set for the first time in Ithaca.

Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and the Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of Double Leopards and Hototogisu).

Carter's solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands. His influences range from LaMonte Young to David Crosby.

Cyrus Gengras
is a member of psych-folk band Antique Brothers, who have many releases featured on Buffalo-based micro-label House of Alchemy. Cyrus will be playing a solo set with vocals, guitar and effects. The Wire said this about the Brothers' sound: "There's a timeless backwoods folk mood here put into collision with glowing rocketship guitars to create a space-folk as big, furry and fierce as the bears the brothers so clearly adore."

American Sphinx is one of many projects by New Thing Productions founder Michael Hentz. This Syracuse/Ithaca duo features Jarek Miller on drums along with Michael on guitar, loops and flute. Their music combines elements of free jazz, psychedelic noise, and raga drones. They are currently working on a new CD that will be available early next year.
